PRE-WORLD AIDS DAY PEER EDUCATION SESSION

THEME: Young People... Take the Lead. Stop AIDS!

The 1st of December, World AIDS Day, is the day when individuals and organisations from around the world come together to bring attention to the global AIDS epidemic. 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day.

While programs around the world have been working to improve young people's sexual and reproductive health, there is still much work to be done, though, the HIV/AIDS prevalent rate increases as young people between aged 15-24 account for about 45 percent of new infections; 11.4 million children and adolescents have been orphaned by AIDS and are now heads of households. In Nigeria, mostly in rural areas, sexuality cannot be spoken about in so many places, not with adults, not at church or social gatherings.

GYCA Nigeria, Akwa Ibom State Chapter collaborates with Young Activists Inititaive to organize a 1-day Pre-World AIDS Day Peer Education Session tagged, "Young People...Take the lead. Stop AIDS" to bring together young adolescent (who are the ones particularly at risk) NGOs working on HIV/AIDS, Health professionals and workers, to address the issues of HIV/AIDS and Reproductive Health as it affects them.

The Pre-World AIDS Day Peer Education Session will give ample opportunity for young people to explore barriers, brainstorm and sample out possible and achievable approaches to halt the spread of HIV/AIDS.
